Why some brands appear naturally in AI answers, while others don’t

In my April piece for PRmoment UK, I look at a paradox many PR teams now recognise. A brand can earn excellent coverage and still be missing from AI answers. However, the coverage is rarely the problem. The way it describes the brand usually is.

How AI decides which brands to recommend

AI recommends a brand with confidence only when three things are true. First, it knows the brand exists. Second, it can find clear information about it. And finally, it can verify that information across several sources.

If one of these is missing, AI turns to a competitor it understands better. This is the thinking behind my method: a brand must be recognised and trusted before AI will recommend it.

Why adjectives rarely make it into AI answers

Words like “exceptional” and “world-class” give AI nothing to work with. By contrast, named restaurants, specific awards and concrete details do. AI repeats what it can extract and check.

Structure also matters. AI pays most attention to the opening lines of a piece. As a result, it can easily miss key facts that sit beneath a long narrative set-up.

Access is the third issue. Much premium media sits behind paywalls, out of AI’s reach. So AI leans on sources it can read, such as reviews, directories and listings. That means a review site can shape AI answers more than a feature in a glossy title.

What this means for PR teams

The answer is not to stop telling beautiful stories. Instead, it is to give them findable facts. Lead with the brand name, place and proof. In other words, swap adjectives for evidence. And make sure the same facts appear in every source AI can access.
